I’m fascinated by the ongoing research concerning the connection between our microbiome and mental health.

This new study sheds interesting insights on the potential alterations in those suffering from depression.

In short, it shows significant differences in the abundance of the Sutterellaceae family as well as species within the ClostridiumEubacterium, and Ruminococcus genera. An additional finding was an increase in cysteine degradation in adults with depression. Cysteine is essential for many pathways in the body, including as a precursor to a powerful antioxidant, Glutathione.

This may be one of the causes behind increased oxidative stress in mental health disorders.
